چکیده

Mutual information is a widely-used metric in medical image registration, which achieves good results; however it can lead to misregistration because of the absence of spatial information. One of the works to overcome this problem is proposed by [10] in which a gradient-based term is combined with mutual information. In this paper, we improve the method in [10] and propose a registration strategy which is more suitable when multiresolution scheme is adopted. Different from [10], the calculations of both the images with different resolutions and their corresponding gradient-like images are integrated under the wavelet transform. Mutual information (MI) and spatial information (SI) are respectively calculated from the low-frequency coefficients and high-frequency coefficients of wavelet transform on each resolution layer; and a hybrid metric is adopted to combine MI and SI together. The proposed registration strategy can run faster than the method in [10] when multiresolution scheme is used. Additionally, compared to the other existing works where wavelet transform is adopted for registration, we apply wavelet transform to the problem of 3D image registration and make use of both of the high frequency coefficients and low frequency coefficients. Experiments show that the proposed method behaves well in MR-MR and CT-MR registration problems.

A Novel Subsampling Method for 3D Multimodality Medical Image Registration Based on Mutual Information

Mutual information (MI) is a widely used similarity metric for multimodality image registration. However, it involves an extremely high computational time especially when it is applied to volume images. Moreover, its robustness is affected by existence of local maxima. The multi-resolution pyramid approaches have been proposed to speed up the registration process and increase the accuracy of th...

Multiresolution registration of remote sensing imagery by optimization of mutual information using a stochastic gradient

Image registration is the process by which we determine a transformation that provides the most accurate match between two images. The search for the matching transformation can be automated with the use of a suitable metric, but it can be very time-consuming and tedious. We introduce a registration algorithm that combines a simple yet powerful search strategy based on a stochastic gradient wit...

Multimodal Brain Image Registration Based on Wavelet Transform Using SAD and MI

The multiresolution approach is commonly used to speed up the mutual-information (MI) based registration process. Conventionally, a Gaussian pyramid is often used as a multiresolution representation. However, in multi-modal medical image registration, MI-based methods with Gaussian pyramid may suffer from the problem of short capture ranges especially at the lower resolution levels. This paper ...

Assessment of the Wavelet Transform for Noise Reduction in Simulated PET Images

Introduction: An efficient method of tomographic imaging in nuclear medicine is positron emission tomography (PET). Compared to SPECT, PET has the advantages of higher levels of sensitivity, spatial resolution and more accurate quantification. However, high noise levels in the image limit its diagnostic utility. Noise removal in nuclear medicine is traditionally based on Fourier decomposition o...

Contourlet-Based Edge Extraction for Image Registration

Image registration is a crucial step in most image processing tasks for which the final result is achieved from a combination of various resources. In general, the majority of registration methods consist of the following four steps: feature extraction, feature matching, transform modeling, and finally image resampling. As the accuracy of a registration process is highly dependent to the fe...
